Ah, Christmas. The countdown begins from the middle of October, seemingly as soon as the clocks are flicked backwards an hour (other than the one you always forget). There’s no point fighting it – before long we’ll all be slumped in front of the TV in whatever 2015’s variation of the Onesie is, groaning from that fifth helping of Xmas Pud. But as everyone also knows, the festive season means plenty of chances to relax with an amazing beer, and forget about the shouting and smoke emanating from the kitchen.
And this is where we come in – our Christmas beers are now live in our online shop!
Santa Paws
First up we have the return of our quintessential fireside warmer, Santa Paws. After all, nothing reflects this time of year quite like a traditional style borne of the country where winter often begins in August. Santa Paws links eight different malts together to give a robust baseline and a depth of complexity - Extra Pale, Munich, Dark Crystal, Flaked Oats, Carafa Special 3, Amber, Brown and Weyermann Oak Smoked malt (for those with a BrewDog spotter’s book).
The result is a rousing medley of bitter dark chocolate, with an initial espresso edge crossing into a sweeter caramel and dark stone fruit flavour, before the beer finishes with a layering of smoke that lifts the aftertaste. Santa Paws is a perfect pairing for darker, richer Christmas desserts and for vegetarian main offerings such as mushroom wellington – the earthiness of the latter really works with the smoky edge of the beer!
Hoppy Christmas

The upcoming festivities are littered with double acts; Morecambe and Wise, Sage and Onion, Relatives and Ibuprofen. We’ve joined with the programme and are welcoming back our second Yuletide offering Hoppy Christmas (the polar opposite to Santa Paws). A 7.2% jolt from one of our favourite hops – Simcoe – it is a no holds-barred salvo of everything that a festive release should be (and that’s ‘release’ as in ‘escape’).
Tastewise, this eulogy to the festive hop is a flurry of citrus – pithy orange and zesty grapefruit, but with deeper layers of more fragrant tropical notes. They say everyone should get at least one Christmas wish – and Simcoe is ours. If ever a drink existed to rescue an overly-dry turkey, it is this – the hop-forward IPA is the perfect foil for ‘the white meat’ (and it also goes amazingly well with any fish-based starter).
Abstrakt AB:19
We’re not done there, however. Like any good festive menu, we’ve squeezed in a little more – and in this case, the ‘trimmings’ consist of the latest iteration of our boundary-pushing Abstrakt series, AB:19, one of the most complex AB’s we have ever released. AB:19 is a blend of two barrel-aged saisons which have then in turn been aged together further in rum casks to create a beer as intricate as it is titanic.
Barrel Master Bowman has outdone himself yet again – you could be listing the different flavours all week. It is at once warming and with deep, dark stone fruit as it is with the vibrancy of star anise, mint and liquorice. There are also notes of treacle toffee, vanilla, blackcurrant and coconut. Definitely one for the fireside…
These three beers will also launch on draft at 6pm tonight in our UK Bars! Which are you looking forward to the most?

Are all the xmas beers sold out for the year?
Not sure about the Abstrakt double Saison. One Saison is usually too much for me ....
